AbstractThis work reports the development of a computeraided- design methodology consisting of three steps for probe-fed cavity-backed, stacked microstrip patch antennas. In the first step, the rigour of a numerical technique such as the finite element method (FEM) to describe the electromagnetic behaviour of these structures is incorporated. The application of the FEM is carried out on a highly efficient basis through a sophisticated domain decomposition approach. From these results, a neural network (NN) is trained to output the desired response of the antenna according to the value of design parameters. Thanks to the versatily of this NN, a global optimization through simulated annealing or genetic algorithms is lastly executed to obtain a final design. The proposed methodology is validated through a real design whose numerical results are compared with measurements with good agreement.
